I started out in radio by winning a contest. Honest to God true. I had never had any desire to enter in to radio and I was listening to WKXW (NJ 101.5) and I heard they were holding a contest to take over the relationship show (The Passion Phones – GOD AWFUL name!). So on a whim, I called and a week later – I had the job! Now this little factoid drives my radio friends crazy. Apparently most people in radio toiled away at it in college, and moved around the country working in the backwoods of nowhere for years and they LIVE for it. To me, it was a full time job when I didn’t have one. Sorry guys! But I have grown to love it, so here I still am (although my bank account yearns for the old days when I had a “real” job).

I did that for 5 years before I was summarily fired – exactly 3 weeks after being congratulated on my ratings and being presented with a bonus. Radio’s GREAT!

I collected unemployment for a couple of months, and was hired to take over the morning show on WCTC (1450 AM). For four years, I was “Mary in the Morning” and NJ’s first female anchor of a morning show.

After four years, I took the plunge and joined a short lived, syndicated show. It had promise and better hours………..until they stopped paying me. That’s usually the first red flag.

Luckily, a couple of months in to the syndication debacle, WKXW was sold and the new owners approached me and asked me to come back and host the relationship show again.   My spidey senses told me the syndicated show was on life support at best, so I took the gig and did both for a couple of months.  Eventually I finally got tired of working for the syndicated show for free. Let’s just say that entire venture didn’t end well and the “money guy” just ended a 2 year stint in Ft. Dix on Federal wire fraud charges. (trust your gut kiddies)

So I was back on WKXW for 5 more years and guess what?! Fired AGAIN! Only this time the ratings bonus check came AFTER they fired me. Can’t say that didn’t make me smile.

Luckily the radio world is a small one and I was contacted by Howard Stern and the Fox News Channel. Long story short, I chose to put my eggs in the Fox News Channel basket. Nothing against Howard, but Fox offered a lot more opportunity for growth.

So from 2006 to today, I guest host on Fox News Talk (radio) for Brian Kilmeade & John Gibson. In 2008 until 2014, I was also a commentator on the Fox News Channel (TV). In 2014, I had a brief stint on NewsMax TV as well.

Obviously, being associated with Fox opened a lot of doors and I made a lot of good contacts which led to guest hosting opportunities at stations all over the country, including: WHAS; WMAL; KNST; KHOW; KFYI; KOA; KFAB & Sirius/XM to name a few.

In 2013, Longport Media asked me to join their KOOL 98.3 team and bring back the relationship show, only this time rebranded as “Life! with Mary Walter”. I did that until June 2015, when I saw the red flags flying once again and decided to pull the show.

Finally in February of 2016, WHAS had an opening for which I applied and after seven years of guest hosting on that station, they offered me a full time job. So now I am the host of the “Mary Walter Show” on 840AM WHAS out of Louisville, KY from 6-8pm eastern. And I continue to guest host on stations all over the country.

I also provide voice over services for a variety of clients.

Oh and I’m a Villanova alum and a HUGE fan, which makes me intolerable the entire month of March.

I’m a born and raised Jersey Girl. You can take the girl outta Jersey, but you can’t take the Jersey outta the girl. And frankly, why would you?
